GIS Day GIS technology and geography take the spotlight during this annual international showcase. GIS professionals, students, educators, and community members from around the world participate in events ranging from corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, and community expos, to school-wide assemblies, GPS scavenger hunts, and GIS-inspired baking contests. Through the combined efforts of GIS Day participants, millions of children and adults have been educated about GIS technology and the importance of geography since GIS Day began in 1999. The National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week since 1987 to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children.
